White: the line to your reel. Orange: the tag end, the part you move. Mirror flips the drawing for tying left-handed.
Steps
Tie a loose overhand knot in the line, 15 to 25 cm from the end, and pass the tag end through the eye of the hook or lure.
Bring the tag end back through the overhand knot, entering on the same side it came out. Slide the knot to set the size of the loop.
Wrap the tag end round the standing line: 6 or 7 turns in light line, 4 or 5 in heavier line, 2 or 3 in very heavy line.
Pass the tag end back through the overhand knot, the same way it came out.
Wet the knot, pull the tag end to close the turns, then pull the loop and the standing line apart to seat it. Trim, leaving a short end.
Tips
- The open loop lets a lure or fly move more freely than a knot tied tight to the eye.
- Wet the knot before you seat it.
