Steps

  1. Keep the braid under firm, steady tension, for example fixed at one end and wrapped round a finger at the other.

  2. Lay the leader across the braid and weave the leader's tag round it, alternately over and under, packing the turns tight: about 16 to 20 passes, more for a thin leader.

  3. Pinch the turns and tie two half hitches with the braid's end round braid and leader together.

  4. Wet the knot and pull braid and leader hard in opposite directions until the braid bites into the leader. Trim the leader's tag close.

  5. With the braid's end, tie 2 to 4 more half hitches round the braid alone, just past the knot, then trim it.

Tips

  • Keep the braid tight the whole time you weave.
  • The final hard pull is what sets the knot; a loose first turn will fail.
