White: one line. Grey: the other line. Orange: the tag end being tied. Mirror flips the drawing for tying left-handed.
Steps
Double about 1 m of line into a loop, leaving a long tag end, and twist the loop about 20 times.
Hold the far end of the loop on your knee or foot and spread it, so the twists pack together.
Keep tension on the standing line and ease off the tag end, so it rolls back down over the twists in a tight second layer, all the way to the loop.
Pinch the turns and tie a half hitch with the tag end round one leg of the loop, then one round the other leg.
Finish with a hitch of 3 to 5 turns round both legs, worked back toward the knot. Wet it, pull it tight and trim.
Tips
- Hold the loop open over your knee, foot or a cleat while you work.
- Keep the twists tight and the second layer packed.
